Site selected for Discount Drug Mart

Business is booming in Columbiana and a new Discount Drug Mart site is planned for South Avenue.

The city’s planning commission heard from the retail drug store this spring and approved the site plan for the 28,000-square-foot facility to be constructed at 14450 South Ave.

Kristy Carter of Discount Drug Mart told the planning commission that the store will employ 30 to 50 people.

Discount Drug Mart first began considering Columbiana as a location for the business at least eight years ago.

City Manager Lance Willard said that construction of the facility is expected to take about a year once it begins.

A start date for the construction has not been announced yet.

Other business plans for the city include a Domino’s Pizza Shop on Columbiana-Canfield Road and a Wendy’s restaurant.

Willard said that Wendy’s should be operational sometime later this summer.

The Columbiana restaurant is currently taking applications.

More recently, during the planning commission meeting held on June 13, the commission approved site plans for a new chiropractic facility at the former Heck’s Restaurant, and a pulp and smoothie bar, and a private personal training office at the Town Center at Firestone Farms.

Lisa Braden is owner of Blue Ribbon Chiropractic and said that she intends to provide chiropractic service for both humans and small animals at a new facility to be constructed at 610 E. Park Ave., where Heck’s used to operate.

Braden said she plans to tear down the existing building and construct a 6,000-square-foot facility. Of that, 3,000-square feet will be targeted for human chiropractic service, as well as massage therapy, acupuncture and a wellness community.

The other 3,000-square-feet would be focused on small animals.

Braden said everything would be housed under the roof and be similar to that of a veterinary clinic, although she would only provide outpatient services and no animals would be staying on site after hours.

“If things went well with small animal we would have to come back and request an addition to the building,” she said of the possibility of offering large animal chiropractic services down the road.

The large animal portion of the facility would be similar to a large equine veterinary hospital, she said, with no animals housed outside.

There is a possibility of overnight stays with the large animal facility, if that were to happen down the road, she said.

Braden has already been practicing animal chiropractic care in the city for the last six years.

As for the new business at the Town Center, Franquie Yazbeck said the Pulp, Juice and Smoothie Bar location will be about 1,300-square-feet and will be open seven days a week.

The business already has locations in Poland and Canfield.

“We put a lot of thought and consideration where we put these stores. We have a really strong reputation for our first two stores. I think we will be a really good fit for the community,” Yazbeck said.

He described the business as a “casual, healthy alternative to fast food places” that appeals to all ages groups.

“People just love our stores and we think we would be a good fit for the community,” he said.

The other new business to be featured at Town Center is Axio Fitness, owned by Erin Mellinger.

Mellinger said she plans on making a two-room studio for the location to conduct one-on-one private personal training.

“For us it’s always great to have new ventures in Columbiana … I think it’s exciting what you are doing,” Mayor and Planning Commission member Rick Noel said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
