COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana School District will continue utilizing the expansion allowed under Ohio House Bill 583 for substitute teaching positions.
During the board meeting this month the board passed a resolution allowing for the continuation of hiring substitutes that do not hold a bachelor's degree.
House Bill 583 extends the flexibility put into place for the hiring of certain teaching positions by House Bill 409 and Senate Bill 1 in prior years in order to address staffing issues within public school districts.
The expansion has been approved for the 2023-24 school year.
District Superintendent Dr. Don Mook said that several district positions were already filled prior to the start of the new school year, which began Wednesday.
New staffing includes new assistant principal Richard Cyrus; Miranda Avent, school psychologist; Kristen Orr, sixth grade intervention specialist; Kelly Dangler, fourth grade intervention specialist; and Emily Aikens, resident substitute teacher.
Mook also said that each of the buildings were updated prior to the start of the new school year.
School safety measures were also put into place for the new school year, including an update to each of the school building entrances and the Threat Extinguishers.
Threat Extinguishers are non-lethal pepper spray canisters and emergency alert systems that school staff can access in the event of an emergency.
In other business during the board meeting the board approved:
-- A resolution to approve the matching grant contribution not to exceed $300,000 toward the purchase of new stadium bleachers at the Firestone Park football complex.
-- The resignation of Lynn Schreiber, bus driver, effective August 2023.
-- The resignation of Vicki Kuhlman, cook/cashier, effective Aug. 1, 2023.
-- The following as substitute support staff: Jodi Bussard, Veronica Call, Michelle, DiBartolomeo, Autumn Howell, Kelley Quigley, Kelly Sauerwein, Crystal Siembida-Boggs, Kenijo Wood and Kristine McKee.
-- The following as athletic department game help for the 2023-24 school year: Barbara Baughman, Haylee Baughman, Leia Baughman, Shelby Baughman, Kristen Caldwell, Mary Calinger, Karen Clark, Lori Stouffer, Lori Dota, Melanie Hepler, Lisa Malcomson, Cindy McCoy, Ron Moser, Jennie Passmore, Tim Passmore, Nancy Tirpak, Anita Webber, Jim Webber and Bonnie Wilkinson.
-- Erin Benner, Amy Cagliuso and David Buzzard as volunteers for a Pupil Activity Program.
-- Madeline Matta, substitute speech therapist, to provide services which fall within the guidelines of auxiliary services program, to the students of Heartland Christian School for the 2023-24 school year.
-- A change in salary for teachers Stephanie Baylor and Margaret Silver.
-- Setting lunch prices at $2.75 at the elementary school and $2.95 for the middle and high school; and lunch for adults at $3.80 for all buildings. Breakfast was set at $1 for all buildings and $1.40 for adults. The reduced price was set at $0 for all buildings for lunch and breakfast and milk was set at 50 cents.
-- A resolution adopting a Calamity Day Alternative Make-Up Plan.
The next meeting was set for 6 p.m. Sept. 12.
