LEETONIA -- Village council approved a new resolution regarding the village's police training program.
The resolution, given its second and third readings by council with the emergency clause, codifies the village's policy regarding the payment of police academy tuition in exchange for years of service as an officer following graduation. Under the newly codified policy the village will pay the tuition of a prospective officer in exchange for two years of service to the village. Should the officer leave before the two-year term is completed, they would have to reimburse the village for the expense of their tuition in full.
Other police matters approved included authorization for Police Chief Allen Haueter to accept a $5,800, 25% matching grant from the Ohio Attorney General's Office for the purchase of eight new police vests. As it is a 25% matching grant the village will pay approximately $1,450 for its share of the purchase. Haueter explained that the vests expired and required replacement every five years.
In his report Shade Tree Commissioner Jeff Schreiber said that he had been in contact with Rydar Tree Removal to address low hanging branches across the village, including particularly bad examples on Somer Street, Stoy Street and the Chestnut Street extension. Schreiber said that they had been added to the schedule and it is hoped they will be completed sometime next week.
The meeting also saw Mayor Kevin Siembida update council on the status of the village's project to expand the industrial park. Siembida said that a meeting has been set with Howells and Baird President Jon Vollnogle to develop a master plan for the expansion. Siembida said the plan is needed prior to applying for grant funding for necessary water and sewer line upgrades for the project.
Village council will meet next at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
