LISBON -- A man who injured three Salem police officers and an ambulance employee during a disorderly fight Sunday night appeared for arraignment Thursday on multiple counts, including felonious assault.
Joshua Jesiolowski, 31, Stratton Road, Salem, was charged with felonious assault, a first-degree felony, three counts of fourth-degree felony assault on a peace officer and misdemeanors of resisting arrest physical harm to officer and disorderly conduct.
Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Katelyn Dickey scheduled a preliminary/pretrial hearing for Aug. 10 and set bond at $250,000 cash or surety, with Jesiolowski remaining in the county jail.
All the charges stem from a call at 8:01 p.m. July 30 in the 900 block of South Avenue, Salem, where a man in a black hoodie was reported coming onto the property. Salem police officers approached him and detained him due to his demeanor, with the fire department and EMT ambulance responding, too.
According to a Salem police report, EMT ambulance was preparing to transport him when he allegedly started destroying property and swung at medical personnel. He jumped out of the ambulance and ran up to a police cruiser and attempted to fight officers. He was placed into custody after resisting, but then continued to resist while being put into the back of a cruiser.
The report said he worked his hands in front of him and managed to free one hand. Officers pulled him back out of the cruiser when he began fighting them. During the fight, he was sprayed with pepper spray and tased. Once secured, he was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center by the fire department squad. EMT transported one officer to Salem Regional Medical Center and a second EMT unit transported a second officer to St. Elizabeth Mercy Health. Once released from treatment, Jesiolowski was taken to jail on the multiple charges.
The most serious charge, the felonious assault, resulted from Jesiolowski allegedly causing serious physical harm to Sgt. Brandon Smith, who suffered a leg/ankle injury and broken bone in his leg, and was hospitalized because of the defendant's violent behavior and actions.
The three assaults on peace officers resulted from Jesiolowski allegedly striking Patrolman Doug Osberg in the face while impaired by drugs, causing physical harm and a cut to the face, along with striking EMT worker Allen Masters in the head in the back of the ambulance and causing serious physical harm to Patrolman Cody Ray by kicking him and fighting him, injuring the victim's back and causing him to be hospitalized.
The other charges came from Jesiolowski allegedly being voluntarily intoxicated and violently resisting arrest.
