SALEM – The annual Star Trax Night 5K run will celebrate 30 years of fundraising in support of the Salem Schools Track and Cross Country program Saturday.
The annual race was held for the first time in 1993, and at that time a night race was considered something of a novelty. However, in the years since, the concept and the event have become extremely popular in the area, serving as the Xtra Mile Club's largest fundraiser each year.
"It's a great community event. We have people come out and watch and even cheer people on from the sidewalks," said Xtra Mile Club President Joe Hovorka.
This year's race will have registration begin at 7 p.m. at a cost of $25 and includes a T-shirt while supplies last, with the race officially beginning at 9 p.m. with a lap around Sebo Stadium, and will feature an after party across the street in the St. Paul School parking lot.
"When it was first started, it was one of the original night runs in all of Northeast Ohio, so we're excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary with an after party," said Hovorka.
The after party will feature a food truck, soda from Kast Iron Soda Works and Birdfish beer. Participants that are over the age of 21 will receive a free beer at the after party, and those aged 20 and under will receive a free pop. Race awards will also be presented in the St. Paul lot following the race.
While the deadline for sponsors to be included on the event shirt, like this year's three gold sponsors CTM Labeling Systems, GC Murphy Bicycle Company and Bob and Linda Sebo, has passed, donations to the Xtra Mile Club may still be made in person the night of the race, or by contacting Hovorka at 813-760-3299. All funds raised by the club go to supporting the Salem Schools Track and Cross Country programs, helping to fund the purchases of necessary equipment, running shoes and race entry fees.
"This is what we do; we exist to help raise money for the track and cross country teams," said Hovorka.
Hovorka said that to ensure clarity and the safety of participants, luminaries will be posted throughout the course and that there will be a police escort for the lead runner. He also said volunteers and event staff will be posted at all intersections along the course to assist with traffic control.
