LISBON -- The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD) met last Wednesday and Superintendent Bill Devon reported to the board that the second annual Ability Walk & Roll event was again a success.
The event, held Aug. 26, was an activity-filled day held at Eastwood Field in Youngstown.
"There's so many things to do, you can't do them all," he said of the Ability Walk & Roll. "It was very, very nice; a huge success and just a great way of raising awareness and just a great day."
According to the Fairhaven Foundation, the Ability Walk & Roll was created "to spread awareness of the importance of inclusion, acceptance and respect for people of all abilities." The event included a symbolic walk around Eastwood Field, games, face painting, exhibit spaces, complimentary refreshments and an outside movie screening.
The CCBDD also approved a $2,500 donation to disability classrooms in the Beaver Local School District and for completion of the district's calming sensory garden and a request by Devon to lease a seven-passenger van to Crestview Schools at the rate of $400 per month to transport handicapped students. Devon said the van has been sitting dormant and he would much rather see it used for its intended purpose. The board was in agreement.
Other passed agenda items included renewing membership in the Ohio County Association of County Boards at a cost of $28,120, appointing a delegate to attend the fall conference in Columbus, appointing Pam Elkins as Major Unusual Incident coordinator and approving the August bills and outside employment for several board employees that would not interfere with their duties. The board voted down a contract with Shred-It for two bins. Devon explained the board found a cheaper alternative.
In announcement news, Devon reported to the board that the policy and personnel manuals should be completed by the October board meeting, the remote working schedule for employees is going smoothly and the board in-service meeting is planned for Oct. 11 at Chef Ray's Diamond Bar and Grill in East Liverpool. He also announced the client-staff softball game is set for Saturday at Firestone Park and that there are 42 students enrolled at the Robert Bycroft School.
