SRMC continues growth after 110 years

By Submitted material 3 min read

SALEM -- What started out as the vision of 14 physicians to build a community hospital has turned into over a century of "Serving, Caring and Healing" at Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC).

Sept. 13, 2023, marked 110 years since crowds arrived in horse drawn carriages to celebrate the opening of a new hospital. Since that time, SRMC has had the privilege of caring for hundreds of thousands of area residents; and continues to build on its long-standing tradition of providing high-quality, compassionate care.

Innovations in Care

SRMC's legacy of advancing health care in the region dates back to its very beginnings.

After the hospital had been open for just a few months, Dr. Stanton Heck, chief of the hospital's x-ray department and pioneer in the x-ray industry, financed the purchase of x-ray equipment to give patients local access to the newest innovations in medical imaging.

Today, area patients are still benefiting from SRMC's state-of-the-art imaging services - from 3T Open MRI and 128-Slice CT scans to its nationally-recognized Breast

Imaging Center of Excellence. Additionally, the hospital is a Siemens National Showcase site for the next generation 3D PET/CT scanner with the fastest and highest image quality available anywhere in the nation.

SRMC is also transforming cancer care in the region through its strategic partnership with the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center (UHSCC). Accredited by the Commission on Cancer®, the UHSCC at SRMC brings expert care to area cancer patients, so they can focus on their treatment and recovery without having to travel outside of their communities.

Commitment to Growth

Through decades of growth, SRMC has remained committed to meeting the needs of its communities.

In 2014, SRMC opened a $42.5 million patient bed tower as one of the most significant expansion projects in its 110-year history. The tower features 87 private patient rooms in an advanced healing environment to transform the delivery of care for patients.

This expansion was closely followed by the opening of SRMC's Cancer & Infusion Center, Orthopaedic Bone & Joint Center and Outpatient Procedures department in 2015; and new state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit in 2017.

The hospital continues to move forward in 2023 as the regional leader in health care with the expansion of the SRMC Surgery & Outpatient Pavilion at Firestone Farms TownCenter in Columbiana.

This state-of-the-art facility was developed as part of SRMC's strategic plan to address the increased demand for a convenient and lower cost alternative to hospital-based care; while offering the same high levels of quality, safety and advanced patient care.

The 76,600-square-foot facility is one of the area's largest medical facilities and will tentatively be completed in early 2024. The SRMC Surgery & Outpatient Pavilion will open in phases and feature:

– The Advanced Radiology Center

– Infusion Center

– The Firestone Surgery Center

– Multispecialty Physician Offices

The Firestone Surgery Center will specialize in providing same-day surgeries, offering a wide range of high-quality, minimally invasive surgical procedures in a streamlined, cost-effective setting.
