COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana School District's overall enrollment is slightly down compared to prior years but District Superintendent Don Mook is optimistic for the future.
Mook gave an overview of the enrollment trend to the board of education last month, noting that students moving out of the district and a larger graduating class than the incoming Kindergarten class are factors in the decline.
People opting to homeschool their children instead also play a role, he said.
"Our open enrollment in and out remains about the same with less leaving the district versus open enrolling into our system. However, we have done and continue to do some of the best work with children in the state," he said, referring to the district's latest performance on the state report card.
The district earned 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Mook said he is "extremely proud" of the results and that it is "a testament to the hard work and commitment of our students, parents, teachers and staff."
He went on to say that he believes enrollment will increase over time.
"In the long run, we believe our school system's long standing reputation of academic excellence will continue to attract families who seek an excellent education for their children," he said.
In other business the board approved:
-- The resignation of Bridget Henderson, Individual Aide, effective Aug. 18, 2023.
-- Hunter Moffett as custodian.
-- Kelly Sauerwein as Aide/Paraprofessional
-- Emily Aikens as Substitute Teacher
-- Bonnie Wilkinson as Substitute Teacher
-- upplemental contracts for Mark Bush, Jennifer Fry, Zach Hertel, Amy McCormick, Allison Moran, Trisha Nord, Morgan Sauerwein, Austin Saverko and Ronald Stallsmith.
-- Jennifer Dickey, Donna Schlueter and Carrie Ramos as band volunteers and Kenneth Wilson as soccer volunteer.
-- Amanda Cleghorn, High School Guidance Counselor, to participate in the Alternative Principal Licensure option.
The next board meeting was set for 6 p.m. Oct. 10.
