SALEM -- Salem voters elected Sara Baer as First Ward councilman in Tuesday's general election.
According to complete but unofficial results, Salem's First Ward residents selected challenger Baer to represent them on the Salem City Council, with Baer receiving 563 (53.36%) votes while incumbent Councilman Steve Faber received 492 (46.64%) votes.
Baer thanked Faber for the way he conducted himself in his campaign and for his representation of first ward residents on the city council.
"I am truly humbled at this outcome and look forward to my service," said Baer. "I would like to thank Mr. Faber for his campaign and recent representation of ward one," said Baer.
She thanked all the people who had supported her campaign and residents for placing their faith in her to represent them and everyone who voted in Tuesday's election.
"I must give enormous thanks to my friends and supporters, and the voters in today's election. I have been blown away by the support I have received in this race; thank you very much for your trust and faith in this election. As first ward's representative on city council I intend to repay that with the same trust and commitment in my representation on city council," said Baer.
Faber congratulated Baer on both her victory and the quality of her campaign, noting that the voters had decided it was "time for a change," and that the democratic system was working as intended.
"I want to congratulate Sara Baer; she ran a great campaign and did a better job than I did," said Faber.
While this is Baer's first elected position, she serves on the Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Board and serves as a precinct judge for the Columbiana County Board of Elections. Baer is also part of several community organizations including Salem Rotary, the Salem Federation of Women's Clubs and the United Way. Baer also serves in administrative positions within several community programming organizations as secretary for the Downtown Salem Partnership, president of the Burchfield Homestead Society, co-founder of the Salem Second Saturday program, and co-founder and president of BeeCity USA-Salem.
A graduate of Clonlara, Baer has attended Youngstown State University and Center College, and is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu London. Baer has also earned a certificate in corporate governance from the Kellogg School of Management. Baer worked at Master Fluid Solutions as corporate director for 14 years prior to her retirement.
