COLUMBIANA -- The owner of a home health care and hospice business is looking to construct a warehouse in the city in order to better serve the area.
William Arfaras presented his request to the city's planning commission in October.
He said that he and his father own the businesses that have served the Columbiana County area for 25 years.
"Both companies require a lot of equipment to keep people where they are located," he said, referring to their goal of allowing people to remain at home while being treated or receiving hospice care.
"There are a lot of patients in this area, a lot of business in this area. We want to bring our business to Columbiana," he said.
He noted that with more people moving to the city or building new homes, there is a need to keep those people in their homes.
He said the primary goal is the warehouse space, which would serve as storage for the beds and equipment used.
He added that they would also like to utilize the property for some self storage as well.
The property in question is on Sponsellor Road and is currently owned by Nelson Witmer.
Arfaras said the property will feature security cameras and be secured with gates.
The planning commission approved the preliminary site plan review; however, it was noted that the property is currently zoned C-4, which does not permit the use of public self storage.
The matter was sent to council, with city council approving a first reading of legislation during its Nov. 7 meeting to allow for a new conditional use of public self storage in a C-4 district.
A public hearing has been scheduled for the conditional use request for 7:15 p.m. Dec. 19.
