On Friday, Dec. 1, the Salem High School Career Day was held in conjunction with the Salem High School Alumni Association and the Rotary Club of Salem at the Kent State Salem Campus.
The event was designed to provide a structured career educational seminar for the sophomores of Salem Senior High School (SHS Class of 2026).
In May 2023, the SHS Alumni Association adapted the organization's mission statement after a strategic planning session was conducted with the SHSAA Board of Trustees. The phrase to "foster student and alumni development" was added to the statement and to the program of work of the alumni association. The organization will now add enrichment and educational activities to its mission which is awarding scholarships, managing memorabilia, and nurturing friendships and enriching memories.
The Rotary Club of Salem has a long history of supporting youth in the community from hosting Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA), International Youth Exchange, the 3rd Grade Dictionary Project, and financial support for scouting and sports programs. Other youth support includes the Salem High School Interact Club and the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center Rotaract Club.
More than 110 high school sophomores were welcomed by the SHSAA Career Day Chairman, Dr. Peter Apicella, SHS Class of 1982; SHSAA Executive Director Audrey Cleveland Null, SHS Class of 1976; SHSAA President Mary Winch Korff, SHS Class of 1991; Salem High School Superintendent Sean Kirkland, SHS Class of 1986; Salem Rotary President, William Dawes; and KSU Dean Dr. Brad Bielski from the Salem Campus of Kent State University. SHS alumni, Rotarians, and other professionals participated throughout the day.
The morning informative career discussions included:

--Values, skills pathways, applications, internships
--Certificate Degree Careers, Manufacturing and Skilled Trades, Military Careers
--College and Advanced Degrees
--Capstone presentation from 1982 SHS alumnus, James Harrington

After a delicious lunch provided by the Rotary Club of Salem, the students attended two career sessions from which they had previously been selected. The 8 categories included:
--Nursing, Medical Imaging, Audiology, Laboratory Medicine, Nutrition, Physical/Occupational Therapy
--Physician, Veterinarian, Dentist, Pharmacist, Optometrist
--Teacher, Counselor, Psychologist, Social Worker, Minister
--Business, Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Banking, Insurance
--Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Lawyer, FBI, Police Officer, Firefighter
--Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical/Civil), Architecture, Computers, Technology
--Military (Army/Navy/Air Force/Marines) and Manufacturing and Skilled Trades - Carpenter, Electrician, Mason, Plumber, Welder, Machinist, Mechanic, Truck Driver, Agricultural Careers, Culinary, and Cosmetology
--Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Graphics Arts, and Social Media
Each session lasted 1 hour with 3-4 professionals discussing their careers. The professionals included alumni from Salem High School, from the Rotary Club of Salem, Kent State Salem Campus, and other professionals from the community. These individuals discussed the following with the students:
--What is your career and how did you get there?
--What education and special testing is required?
--What do you like best about your career?
--What do you like least about your career?
--How do you see the future of your career?
--What would you recommend to anyone interested in your career?
Students were encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions.
Following the last session, the students completed a survey to assist in future planning.
The program has been a huge success in the past and the SHS Alumni Association and the Rotary Club of Salem look forward to continuing this project for future Salem High School students.
