LEETONIA -- A house at 3124 Grafton Road was "leveled," leaving only the basement and some smoldering remains, after catching fire for the second time in two days Friday morning, Leetonia Assistant Fire Chief Jason Hephner said.
Fire departments were called at 7:05 a.m. and the house was fully involved when crews arrived, one day after a small fire in the basement was knocked down and contained.
"When we came by it was fully going," Hephner said.
He did not say whether the fire from Thursday had reignited, only that the investigation has been turned over to the Ohio State Fire Marshal. The causes of the fires are currently unknown. The scene was clear by 12:30 p.m.
Later on Friday at 5:46 p.m., firefighters were again dispatched for some smoldering remains kicked up by an excavator pulling out debris. Crews sprayed down the basement again and were clear after about 30 minutes, Hephner said.
"There's three inches of snow on the ground so it's not going anywhere," he said of the house's remains. "It's probably going to smolder for a day or two."
No one was home when the fire started on Friday and the electric had been turned off to the house Thursday afternoon, Hephner said.
Hephner said that a neighbor plowed the driveway so fire trucks and water tankers could make it up the steep hill with the ice and snow.
"That was a nice help for us," he said.
Columbiana, Winona, and Lisbon fire departments responded for mutual aid to Grafton Road on Thursday and Friday.
