SALEM - In recognition of Board of Education Appreciation Month, Salem Schools Superintendent Sean Kirkland took time Monday to honor the board members.
January is Board of Education Appreciation Month, so Kirkland thanked the board members for all they do to serve the district and presented them with framed certificates of recognition.
"January marks board appreciation month, and it always gives me an opportunity to say thank you to the five of you sitting up here. I realize, and I want you to know I realize, it's a thankless job. Folks run for the board for different reasons, and I can tell you that I understand everyone on this board is running for true support of our kids," said Kirkland. "We have a lot going on in this district, a lot, and that doesn't come without the support that we have. That support along with your trust in the staff and administration that you have, I don't know that you'll ever understand how much I truly appreciate that."
Kirkland also congratulated Suzanne Harding on the birth of her child on Friday.
Additionally, board member Carol Hrvatin took a moment to congratulate one of her former students, 2006 alum Whitney Jeckavitch, on being named principal at Norwich Elementary in the Hilliard School District.
The board also approved several personnel and administrative items.
Personnel matters included maternity leave for Suzanne Harding from Jan. 4 through April 1; athletic supplemental contracts for the spring 2023-2024 athletic season; the hire of bus attendant duty aide Cynthia Jenkins; the list of classified and certified substitutes; the hire of school nurse Lynea Taylor; a pay scale increase for Kathryn Boggess from MA+15 to MA+30; maternity leave for Ashley Taafe from Feb. 14 through May 2; and the appointment of Bonita Newton as state tested nurse aide coordinator.
Administrative items included acceptance of an $800 donation by the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church to be used for Quaker Club; a contract renewal for Educational Funding Group to continue to act as the school's agent with the Schools and Libraries Division of the Universal Service Administrative Company regarding all matters involving Salem's E-Rate funding applications for the E-Rate Funding Year 2024, 2025 and 2026 and all other open E-Rate Funding Years, past, present and future, as necessary; and the short-term school van lease agreement between West Branch Local School District and Salem City School District for use on certain dates in January.
The board of education will meet next at 7 p.m. Feb. 26.
