Trustees discuss pending paving projects

By MORGAN AHART 3 min read

PERRY TOWNSHIP – The Perry Township Board of Trustees discussed pending paving projects Monday.

Trustees discussed both the Pine Lake Road paving project --a joint project with Green Township to lay new blacktop rather than a chip and seal approach --and the potential chip-and-seal roads for 2024.

Trustee Tony Ieropoli said he had been in contact with Green Township officials since the trustees previous meeting, and that they were willing to move forward with the joint project this year, or to hold off for another year. Ieropoli said that if the township was willing to potentially wait to begin the project until next year, trustees could request the paving quote for the road from Columbiana County. Green Township requested a quote from Mahoning County later this year, allowing the townships to choose whichever quote was better.

"We could go ahead and get a quote from Columbiana County for what it would cost for our side and compare it with the quote [Green Township] gets from Mahoning County in late October or November and take the better of the two if we want to wait and do it next year," said Ieropoli.

Of the full list of potential chip-and-seal projects for the year discussed in trustees' previous meeting on Jan. 22 which included the north station parking lot, Lake Avenue, Chestnut Grove Road, Egypt Road, Painter Road and Cunningham Road, and totals roughly 4.35 miles. Ieropoli said he felt Cunningham, Egypt, and Chestnut Grove needed attention the most.

"Out of the roads listed here I feel Cunningham, Egypt, and Chestnut Grove Road are the main concerns, and the other can wait if we had to, or if we want to pursue the blacktop on Pine Lake Road this year," said Ieropoli.

Ieropoli also said that he estimated the township could chip-and-seal for all three roads at a cost of roughly $60,000 based on last year's paving prices. Ieropoli also said that Salem Township which would collaborate with Perry Township for the work on Cunningham was willing to do the work and "were ready to do it last year," and that the cost for the work would be shared by both townships.

"Our cost for Cunningham would be $23,400, and Salem Township's would be $13,000," said Ieropoli.

Ieropoli suggested putting getting quotes for all the projects on the chip-and-seal list for the year from the county. While the township can remove projects from the list later, it cannot add more. Trustees agreed that they should get formal quotes for all the projects, including a paving quote for Pine Lake Road, and move forward from there.

Ieropoli said that while they likely would not receive the paving quote until May, the chip-and-seal quotes should come sometime in March when the township meets with the Columbiana County Engineer's Office.

The board of trustees will meet next 4 p.m. Feb. 26.
