SALEM – The Salem Fire Department has named two new officers.
Kevin Bryan and Kyle Kyser were sworn in as lieutenant and fire inspector, respectively, on March 25.
"It's an honor any time you're able to move up to a different position. It's a big responsibility and you have to be a good leader because you've got guys depending on you," said Bryan.
Bryan, who previously served as fire inspector since 2021, has been with the department for 16 years. A Summitville native, Bryan graduated from Carrolton High School in 1998. Bryan joined the department in May 2008 as a provisional firefighter and was hired full time in September of 2009.
Bryan began his career in firefighting with the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department where he served from 1998 through 2005. In 2006 Bryan moved to the Salem area with his wife Adrian, and joined the Perry Township Police Department where he served through 2013 and served as the Perry Township Fire Chief for a year in 2011.
Bryan said that he had enjoyed his time with the department and as inspector, particularly meeting and developing relationships with businesses around Salem.
"Being able to spend time as an inspector was a highlight, learning about the businesses and making connections that way, and giving safety talks and fire extinguisher classes is always rewarding," said Bryan.
Bryan said the variety and opportunity to meet and serve members of his community were highlights of working with the department.
"It's been interesting at times, you never know what you're going to get day to day, and you get to meet a lot of people and go on interesting calls. Being able to serve the community I live in is a big perk as well," said Bryan.
Kyser has served with the Salem Fire Department for 10 years, having joined the department in 2014. Kyser is a Salem native and a 2005 alum and has known he wanted to be a firefighter since he was a child.
"I remember going to the fire station as a kid and I guess it just always stuck with me," said Kyser.
Prior to joining the Salem department, Kyser served with the Perry Township Fire Department from 2007 through 2012, and the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department from 2012 through 2019.
Kyser said that he's enjoyed his time with the department and serving the community and is excited for the future.
"I enjoy coming to work every day, there's always something different and new," said Kyser.
Kyser said he considered getting to help people in need and being named inspector the highlights of his career with the department. His first promotion in Salem, Kyser said he is excited to have an opportunity to meet more community members and help ensure Salem's businesses are safe.
"I'm looking forward to getting to go out and meet more residents individually, and in non-emergency situations, and to help make the businesses of Salem safer for both the staff and the public," said Kyser.
