Lisbon Village Council approves sale of street equipment

By EVAN HOUK 3 min read

LISBON -- The Lisbon Village Council approved the sale of a small leaf machine and small roller that are no longer used at its regular meeting Tuesday.

The village street committee met last week and decided to sell the equipment, as well as a DuraPatcher machine that hasn't been used in three years. However, council member Jerry Cox said he disagreed with selling the DuraPatcher.

"I think this is a very very very good tool," Cox said.

Mayor Peter Wilson suggested tabling the vote on the DuraPatcher since council member Zachary Smith, who is a member of the street committee, was absent.

Cox explained that the street committee decided to keep the department's boom truck to take off the boom and use it as a paint truck, because it has a generator built into the workbed.

"They can just move about town when it comes time to spray the crosswalks," Cox said.

Council also considered two options for fixing the drainage on Spruce Street-- a $21,165 project with 12 catch basins that extends up Jefferson Street or a $6,318 project with five catch basins that is only on Spruce Street, from North Market Street to Jefferson. Cox explained that the street committee is waiting to receive a price on the project at East Lincoln Way and Lee Avenue before making a decision on which option to recommend.

"Once we find out what the cost of that project will be, then we'll know where we can get the money at to pursue one of these two options," he said.

At the council's previous meeting, Jim Oliver, street department supervisor, explained that the pipe on Spruce Street is only 8 inches and heavy rains flooded ditches along the road.

In other business, council approved a request from Lepper Library Director Marcy Kaiser to hold storybook walks at the village's exercise path near the Sadie Van Fossan Swimming Pool. The two books being presented are "I Went Walking" from May 30 to June 6 and "In the Tall, Tall Grass" from July 8-15.

"Every year for the last four, we've done storywalks," Kaiser said. "We've done them at the bike trail, we've done them at the square, and at the pool last year."

Also on Tuesday, council approved a resolution to buy salt from the Ohio Department of Transportation in the fall.

Oliver predicted the village would not need to buy much salt, maybe 75 tons, saying there is already about 80 tons in stock and "it doesn't snow anymore," which prompted laughs from those in attendance.

The water department will hire Barnes Tree Service and Landscaping for $1,000 to take down a tree and remove a stump that is encasing a curb stop and preventing water from being turned on at a home in the 400 block of East Lincoln Way, Board of Public Affairs Chair Bill Hoover said.

"We need to get it down so we can get to that curb stop so these people can work on their home so they can move into it," he said.

The Lisbon Village Council will next meet at village hall at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.
