LEETONIA -- Leetonia School Board of Education approved the retirement of two longtime employees during its regular meeting held on March 27.
The retirement of teacher John McIlduff, who began his tenure at Leetonia as a substitute in 1998, and custodian Mark Taylor, who began working for the district in 1980, will be effective July 31 and June 1, respectively.
"I want to thank Mr. McIlduff for his years of service to Leetonia Schools. He certainly will be missed. We wish him the very best in retirement and happiness and health," said Leetonia Exempted Village School District Superintendent Dennis Dunham. "Mr. Taylor is a longtime custodian here, if my math is right, he has been with us for 44 years. He's had a great career and I want to thank him for his service to the students and the schools. Both of those guys run through the finish line everyday."
In other personnel matters, the board approved Monica Taylor and April Brinker as substitutes for the 2023-24 school year pending all backgrounds and certifications, supplemental contracts with Scott Andre (volunteer assistant softball coach) and Melissa Sacconi (volunteer track chaperone) and three game workers -- Wesley Hinten, Analise Massey and Kaylin Wilson. The board also approved a one-year classified contract for Peggie Courtwright as part-time cook and a one-year certificated teaching contract for Ronald W. Lee, as well as accepted the resignation of Lori White.
In financial matters, the board approved the renewal of the district's insurance through Liberty Mutual (April 1, 2024 - March 31, 2025) in the amount of $60,559.15 -- property Insurance ($25,062.15), liability insurance ($22,115), fleet insurance ($9,080) and umbrella coverage ($4,302). Three donations were accepted, totaling $800. Doris Kincade donated $500 toward unpaid cafeteria balances. Another $100 was donated anonymously for the fund, while Pidgeon Corporation gifted $200 to the softball fund.
In new business, the board moved to grant the Class of 2024 (40 seniors) their high school diploma on May 24 at 6 p.m., approved the day, time and location of this year's prom as May 3 at 7 p.m. at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman with a promenade to take place at 6 p.m. in the Leetonia EVSD gymnasium and approved the 2025-26 school year academic calendar as well as a modification to it. In other new business, the Leetonia High School program of study/course offerings for 2024-25 school year was approved as the adoption of OASBO 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a College Credit Plus Master agreement with Youngstown State University, memorandum of understanding with OAPSE regarding the rehiring retired employees, a contract for accounts payable monitoring solutions and an agreement for broadband services and wireless products 2024.
In old business items, the board passed a calendar modification changing April 8 as a non-attendance day for students and staff due to the total solar eclipse and approved a one-year lease extension for Bears to Bee Preschool.
