SHS Interact Club holds mental health fair

By MORGAN AHART 2 min read

SALEM -- The Salem High School Interact Club organized a mental health fair Friday as part of its National Youth Violence Prevention Week programming.

"There's a great need for mental health awareness and support, and since we've been celebrating National Youth Violence Prevention Week, we though a mental health fair was the perfect wrap-up to show students all of the resources available in their community," said Interact Club Advisor Suzanne Harding.

Friday marked the club's second year holding the mental health fair, which was funded through the Bonnie Hoppel School Health Grant by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center. Harding said she felt the students had responded well to the week's programming, and there had been a noticeable increase in unprompted acts of kindness amongst students, and that the club wanted to make the fair an annual tradition.

This year's fair focused on local resources, with over a dozen Salem and Columbiana County organizations in attendance including: PsyCare, the C.A.S.H. Coalition, Family Recovery Center, Interact Club, the Salem Schools Quickmed Clinic, the Brightside Project, the Counseling Center, Ohio State University Extension 4-H Program, Akron Children's Hospital, the Salvation Army, Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter, United Way, Family Success Network, and Christina House Domestic Violence Program.

Harding said that in addition to helping organize the fair and deciding what prizes their table should hand out and designing them, the club had been doing programming all week, having painted a mural in the hallway and organizing several activities including one where they led their fellow students in making "kindness cards," which were shared with their fellow students.
