LISBON -- The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center (CCCTC) awarded a $1,278,500 contract to Salem's J. Herbert Construction for the Information Technology (IT) emerging careers renovations project during a special meeting Wednesday.
The school is renovating the two current IT program spaces -- interactive multimedia and information technology academy -- and expanding the interactive multimedia program into what is currently computer lab A, Assistant Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello said.
The program will take up about 75% of the lab space and is "going to provide additional space for students."
"We're going to get additional equipment as well," Corbisello said.
CCCTC is looking to rebrand the interactive multimedia program and offer additional IT credentials through it.
The project will expand the IT academy space to give the students more room for hands-on learning.
"We're going to focus on some robotics and microchip technology there, as well and offer additional in-demand credentials in that program," Corbisello said.
CCCTC is using funds from the Ohio Career Technical Education Equipment Grant Program, from which it was awarded $1,456,453 in March. They are also using some of these funds to purchase equipment for the criminal justice program.
The grant program is meant to help schools purchase up-to-date equipment to better prepare students to be career-ready upon graduation, Gov. Mike DeWine said via a press release.
Construction is set to start at the end of the school year, June 3, and is set to be completed in time for the start of the 2024-2025 school year on August 19.
Along with J. Herbert Construction, CCCTC is also working with Strollo Architects. Both companies have worked with the school before and understand the needs, Corbisello said.
"J. Herbert Construction has done a multitude of projects here. They kind of know the ins-and-outs of our building," he said.
The CCCTC Board of Education will next meet in the Central Office Board Room at 6 p.m. May 21.
