The Columbiana County Retired Teachers Association met for their April meeting at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church. Nancy Dicken offered the pledge, roll call and prayer. The luncheon was served by the church's women's organization.
Jerry Barnes conducted the business meeting. Loretta Davidson's minutes and Rosemary Bruehler's treasurer's report were both accepted. Barnes offered a brief update on occurrences at STRS and ORTA and encouraged members to contact active teachers to vote for Michele Flannigan for the STRS Board as she stands for transparency.
Gayle Noel, CCRTA Teacher Grant chairperson, introduced the three local teachers who each received $500 for classroom use. The first recipient was Erika Martino, instructor of East Liverpool High School AP Sciences. Martino used her monies to provide supplies for a technique called gel electrophoresis. This procedure is used for DNA analysis and genetic sequencing. Aimee Little, a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Beaver Local, surveyed her students on their reading preferences and their favorite TV shows and movies. With her $500 grant Little was able to purchase book sets to accommodate her students interests and found they now find excitement in reading. The third recipient was Michele Emery, a kindergarten teacher at Beaver Local. Emery used her funds to purchase engaging hands-on literacy learning materials to support their growing kindergarten volunteer program. A special guest was Jake Walgate, principal of Beaver Local Middle.
Jim Davis was the winner of the 50/50.
The winner of the free meal was Janice Reeder.
Members were reminded that the CCRTA philanthropic project for May is supporting The Christina House. Lists of suggested items needed by that organization were passed out. Retired teachers are asked to bring the items to their next meeting Thursday, May 16 at noon.
