PERRY TOWNSHIP – The board of trustees accepted the resignation of the township zoning officer in its meeting Monday.
Trustees voted unanimously to approve the resignation of Zoning Officer Jeffrey Christopher effective Aug. 9. Christopher explained that he was leaving the position to return to further his education, pursuing a master's degree in construction management at Kent State University.
Other matters approved included an increase in zoning appropriations of $1,000 under the "other expenses" line item, and the appointment of Fiscal Officer John Volio as the township's Records Retention Administrator.
During his report trustee Tony Ieropoli said that the road department had prepped the roads submitted by the township for chip and seal this year which include Lake Avenue, Chestnut Grove Road, Egypt Road, Painter Road and Cunningham Road, and that while chip and seal would be upwards of a week behind schedule in the township it would still be completed, estimating the work to be done around the first week of August.
Fire Chief Brandon Smith also provided a mid-year update on the department. Smith said that as of July 19, the department had responded to 218 complaints, 134 of which were EMS calls with the remaining 84 being non-medical. The department has also received mutual aid eight times and given mutual aid 15 times, including for two structure fires in the same day in Salem and Damascus.
Smith said that the department was currently conducting hose testing and had found no issues thus far, and that the engine the department used to responded to the derailment in East Palestine in February was experiencing intermittent issues shifting gears, so the department was "keeping an eye on it" in the event the problem becomes more significant and requires repairs.
Smith also said that the department had added a new member last month and would be working to have them attend an upcoming Fire One certification course, and that he and five of the department's members had attended a pump operation class by the Ohio Fire Academy that was hosted at Kent State, and thanked the university for hosting the class.
Ieropoli also reminded residents on Highland Drive that there would be a hearing for an annexation of a residence on Highland at 9 a.m. Aug 7 at the downtown Columbiana County Courthouse in Lisbon and urged them to attend and share their thoughts about the potential annexation.
The meeting concluded with an executive session for the discussion of personnel matters with no action to follow.
The board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. Aug. 12.
