SALEM -- The Brightside Project has received a major donation from the Ruth Beecher Charitable Trust.

The Brightside Project announced Wednesday that it had received $30,000 in grant funding from the Ruth Beecher Charitable Trust through the PNC Charitable Grant Review Committee. According to a press release, the grant funding will be used to "significantly enhance" the organization's Food for Kids program, which "provides essential resources such as food, hygiene items, and literacy materials to children aged 3-18 in Columbiana and rural Mahoning County."

"The $30,000 grant from the Ruth Beecher Charitable Trust is a tremendous boost for The Brightside Project's Food for Kids program. This generous support will enable us to provide essential food, hygiene products, and literacy materials to children in our community, helping to ensure their well-being and development," said Brightside Project Co-Director Lisa Vittorio.

According to the release, the funding "will be used to purchase food and hygiene items," for the program, which like all Brightside programming is child-centered and allows children to make their own choices of what to take home, "promoting self-esteem, personal power, and decision-making skills." The program also encourages participants "to select books and a 'Brightside Buddy' stuffed animal" in an effort "to support literacy, academic achievement and social-emotional development."

Held on the first and third Thursday of each month from 4 through 6 p.m. at the Brightside Project's office at 483 East Pershing Street for children aged 3-18 in Columbiana and rural Mahoning County, the Food for Kids program is intended to support children "by increasing their access to basic necessities and fostering developmental assets," with an emphasis "on helping children who have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences, with a goal of building resilience and hope."

"We know resiliency is one of the best tools for overcoming adversity. No matter what they face in life, we want them to believe in themselves and know that they have a bright future. Everything we do is about giving them hope," said Vittorio.
