Health commissioner praises new employees
LISBON — Columbiana County Health Commissioner Dr. Wes Vins praised the qualifications of three new employees hired by the county health board during a special meeting last week.
“Really pleased with the high level of expertise and professionalism that we can bring to the service of the residents of Columbiana County,” Vins said.
A 30-year U.S. Navy veteran, Donald Schrader of Youngstown was appointed the new Public Health Emergency Preparedness Grant Coordinator. Vins cited his extensive background in emergency planning preparedness. He’s retired from the U.S. Navy as a Command Master Chief in support of the U.S. Marine Corps. He has a master’s degree from Pennsylania State University in public health preparedness and homeland security.
There were 39 applicants for the job, with four who were contacted for interviews. Only two of the four actually interviewed.
Emma Gray of Salem was appointed as an environmental health specialist in training. Vins said she has an environmental studies degree from Youngstown State University and three years experience working in another county. There were six applications for the position, with just one interviewed due to her qualifications.
Malori Horn of Lisbon was appointed to the Clerk II position, with the understanding that she’ll have her notary public credentials before she starts. She has a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and extensive experience in customer service through retail, including as a store manager.
There were 30 applicants for that position, with three interviewed. Board member Dave Rose asked why only three were interviewed and Vins explained that some didn’t meet the minimum requirements and they were focusing on people with administrative experience.
“We tried to take the best of the group,” he said.
The next regular meeting of the health board is set for 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the health district building, state Route 45, Lisbon.
