Records show no history of discipline for WB’s DeShields
BELOIT — Varsity girls basketball head coach Walt DeShields had no history of disciplinary action, according to a school official.
In response to a records request by this newspaper, West Branch Treasurer Adam Fisher confirmed Friday that DeShields had no history of disciplinary action in his personnel file. Police Chief John Calko of the Goshen Police District, which provides school resource officers for the district, also confirmed that no criminal complaints have been filed with the department against DeShields, nor has any abnormal or inappropriate behavior been reported to the school resource officer.
This comes in the wake of a statement on the issue by the district Wednesday which attributed the non-renewal of DeShields’ coaching contract to “[c]ertain incidents raised by members of the community concerning Coach DeShields’ behavior” that created “significant concerns regarding his judgment.” An email seeking clarification of the nature of those incidents sent to Wolf and Superintendent Micki Egli Wednesday, and a subsequent call to Egli received no response as of Friday afternoon.
No formal action has been taken by the board of education regarding DeShields at this time. However, an emergency meeting was called for 8 p.m. April 2 to discuss employment of a public official in executive session with possible action to follow and subsequently canceled hours later. A notice from Fisher sent to this newspaper attributed the cancellation to the “advice of legal counsel” for not meeting the prerequisite for an emergency meeting.
The West Branch Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. for its regular meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Per the board’s policy anyone who wants to provide comment at a board meeting may email their statement to any member of the board of education or the Egli to be read aloud during the meeting.
