Leetonia looking to fill empy council seat

LEETONIA — The empty chair at the council table usually occupied by Roman Ferry didn’t go unnoticed for long Wednesday as the city’s administration gathered for its regular meeting.

Mayor Kevin Siembida had announced Ferry submitted his resignation April 17 for personal reasons, according to the letter addressed to Siembida and his council colleagues.

Ferry was seeking re-election to his council seat this year as are Bill Garlough and Suzanne Toback, as four council seats are up for grabs.

Two newcomers, William Merdich and Leisa Lorch, also have filed to challenge.

It is unknown if either of the newcomers may apply to fill for Ferry’s now open seat.

Ferry had some parting words in the letter for his colleagues.

“I would like to thank each and every one of the other council members, as you have taught me many things. I have enjoyed working with each of you,” he explained. “I know that council will continue to lead Leetonia to (be) a better place one day at a time, making steady and continued progress.”

Letters of interest for potential council members may be directed to Siembida by 5 p.m. June 7 at village hall, 300 E. Main St., Leetonia OH 44431. Applicants must have resided within village limits a minimum of 30 days to be eligible.

Siembida also shared that Gavin Rambo would be resigning as village zoning officer effective June 13 to “further (his) career in law enforcement.” He also thanked officials for their dedication as well as assistance during his employment.

There is no residency requirement attached to the zoning officer position, which Siembida also is seeking letters of interest for. He asked those also be forwarded to him at the village hall address listed above.

In other action, council passed the first reading of a resolution acquiring and approving the demolition of 27 Main St., a fire-damaged residential property in cooperation with the Columbiana County Land Revitalization Program. Council also approved a $5,000 interfund loan to the water fund to cover an unanticipated shortfall to pay for a higher bill from Salem due to a water leak.

Further discussion about possible upcoming events continued with council establishing subcommittees for possible America 250th anniversary events next year. Interested parties in contributing to organizing the celebration should contact officials through the mayor’s office.

Village administrator Gary Phillips also reminded Leetonia residents of the village cleanup being held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday near the salt shack behind village hall. No tires are being accepted due to a lack of funding and participants must provide proof of residency with a photo ID.

The next council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 at council chambers in village hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
