Student achievement lauded at the Columbiana school board meeting

COLUMBIANA — District superintendent Dr. Don Mook had a lot of good news to pass along to board members Tuesday during their May board meeting, included some highlights of student achievement as the year wraps up.

Before sharing his good news regarding test results, he turned the floor over to elementary principal Kim Sharshan and high school principal Jeff Jackson, who each introduced their guests for the presentations.

Sharshan introduced participants in last week’s Living Museum, who attended in their Amelia Earhart, Elvis Presley and Joshua Dixon costumes and shared a very short biography with attendees, which they had discovered during the research for their fourth-grade social studies class.

On the other hand, Jackson shared that Columbiana had six qualifiers for this year’s Columbiana County Educational Service Center’s Heads Above the Rest breakfast compared to some districts which only had one and others none.

To qualify for inclusion, participating students had to have scored above 31 on their ACT test, which would put the testtaker in the 95th percentile that interest more competitive and elite colleges and universities. He introduced the students, many who were attending with family members, at the board meeting and they shared future plans.

Mook also informed board members and board attendees that he had received preliminary testing numbers that showed Columbiana students performing well in math, science and social studies across the board above state averages — except barely missing proficiency in sixth- and eighth-grade math.

He said he believes that the district policy of promoting some of their more exceptional math students from basic to algebra in the eighth-grade test scores. For example, while Columbiana eighth-graders finished with a 64 percent which is below the desirable 80 and above, the promoted students in eighth-grade were 100 percent proficient.
