Columbiana City Council officially approves open meetings settlement
COLUMBIANA — Among other pieces of legislation Tuesday night, city council concurred with a motion approving the settlement with Brian Ames, who had been suing Columbiana council for alleged improper executive sessions.
In the resolution approved unanimously, it states Ames received $5,000 plus court costs of $256.63.
The motion doesn’t include a date of settlement or the subsequent case dismissal, nor if the city’s insurance footed the bill.
The motion drafted by Municipal Attorney Mark Hutson just stated that city manager Lance Willard and Hutson had discussed the lawsuit within executive session numerous times and that Willard had the authority to settle it, referencing “contracting matters” being part of his job responsibilities without any kind of vote.
After the absence of the alleged settlement had not been referenced in recent council minutes, this motion resolved its absence by putting it on the formal record.
Members also approved road closures from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 16 for Jennifer Remich and the Canterbury Court Neighborhood Party as well as 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 for Marti Noles and the North Elm Street Party.
In other action, council members approved two pieces of legislation accepting the amount and rates as determined by the Columbiana and Mahoning county budget commissions.
Residents also were reminded to make sure that they have registered to receive alerts for the city by signing up on the city’s website.
