Columbiana Schools expecting 5-star rating on state report card

COLUMBIANA — District superintendent Donald Mook shared Tuesday night that Columbiana is expecting a five-star rating on the school report card based on preliminary data.

In the past, Columbiana has ranked as high as 4.5 stars but just always missed five stars, which is the highest rating that the Ohio Department of Education bestows on a district.

The district routinely had earned five stars in the Achievement, Gap Closing, Early Literacy and Graduation Rate component but always always fell short in the Progress component.

The school board also approved the Columbiana Public Library’s budget as submitted and appointed Bruce Jeffries as a library trustee, filling a seven-year term.

Board members also approved a whole list of supplemental contracts for the upcoming school year: Austin Saverko and Ryan Holmes as high school assistant football coaches; Robert Spaite as weight room supervisor; Kelly Dangler as assistant volleyball coach; Brandon Moran as assistant athletic director; Jennifer Sant as freshman class advisor; Amy Moreschi as sophomore class advisor; Holly Ferguson and Courtney Weinstock as junior class advisor; Alana Rivello and Patricia Missos as senior class advisor; Amanda Moore as elementary drama coach; Charles Miller and Amanda Moore as lighting and sound operators; Kathy Martin as Foreign Language Club advisor; Stephanie Baylor and Meg Silver as Interact advisors; Amanda Moore and Zach Hertel as Intramurals advisors; Megan Cowan as vocal music director for grades 5 through 12; Colleen Campbell for National Honor Society advisor at high school; Stephanie Taylor and Judi Edwards Sturgeon as NHS director at middle school; Jennifer Fry and Amy Moreschi as Pep Club advisor; Holly Ferguson and Courtni Weinstock as prom advisor.

The board also approved Jennifer Sant, student government advisor at high school; Stephanie Baylor and Jodi Sturgeon-Edwards, student government at advisor at middle school; Colleen Campbell, Physics Olympics coach; Amy McCormick and Ashley Michael-Sherwood, Robotics advisor; Trisha Missos, high school yearbook advisor; Carlie Beech and Caleb Sims, middle school yearbook advisor; Kristi Ebben, elementary school yearbook advisor; Susan Wilson, LDPC chair for one year; Lisa Malcomson, Julie McClish and Mark Bush, LPDC committee (three-year appointments); Andrea Jarrett, home instruction tutor; Ron Moser, Zach Hertel and Susan Wilson, lunchroom duty monitor at middle school; Jennifer Martin, outdoor education coordinator; Jordan Graham, Ron Moser, Jennifer Martin, Mark Bush and Susan Wilson (sub), outdoor education staff; Diane Mediate, Ron Moser, Mark Bush and Susan Wilson (sub), Saturday school monitor; Megan Cowan, lead mentor; and Jennifer Sant (first-year teacher) and Colleen Campbell, mentors.

The following supplemental contracts also were granted: Cheyenne Carr, flagline; MaryAnn Tofill, middle school cheerleading; Alex Ferfolia, Krish Reash, Zach Davis, Tim Reash, and Josh Aikens, assistant middle and high school football coaches; John Toilas, football equipment manager; Amon Eavers, weight room supervisor for football; Daniel Linebaugh, fall athletic trainer; Lauren Eisenbraum, freshman volleyball coach; Ashley Morley and Marti Noble, middle school volleyball coach; Debra Ulam, Academic Challenge coach at high school; Nancy Tirpak, student government advisor at both middle and high school as well as OSHA compliance director.

The following volunteers were approved: Amanda Dunham, Kelly Paloski and Jessica Savon for band; Eamon Eavers and Trevor Dearing for football; Kristen Reynolds for swimming; Bonnie Wilkinson, Dan Marks and Madison Stryffeler for volleyball; as well as Alex Table and Adrianna Goehring for soccer.

In other action, the board:

— Renewed the fourth year of a five-year agreement with Nutrition Inc for cafeteria operation.

— Contracted with the parents/guardians of Andrew and Sophia Klindworth as well as Martin and Nolan Susanto to Holy Family School in Poland.

— Approved three-year contracts for Joshua Dixon Elementary School principal Kim Sharshan, who also serves as assistant superintendent; Jason Martin, middle school principal; Jeff Jackson, high school principal; Miranda Arner, school psychologist; and Richard Cyrus, assistant principal.

— Approved one-year contracts for Erin Heasley, transportation coordinator; and Michele DiBartolomen, medical professional.

— Employed bus drivers Richard Baird and Cory Hile.

— Approved custodians Tyler Alexander and James Ward; paraeducators Rhiannon Smith and Peyton Smith; substitute teachers Lisa Arter and Bonnie Wilkinson.

— Employed Crystal Siembida Boggs as summer head cross country coach; Charles Miller as instrumental music director for grades five through 12; and Margaret Silver as assistant music director.

The school board next will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 in the high school media center.
