E-Waste recycling event returns to Lisbon

LISBON — For the second year in row, the Village of Lisbon is doing its part to be environmentally friendly and help area residents with a little summer cleaning when the E-Waste recycling event returns to the village on July 19.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), non-working or now-obsolete electrical or electronic equipment is considered E-Waste. Common e-waste items are computers, mobile phones, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers and fax machines. WHO reports that E-Waste is the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world, increasing three times faster than the world’s population and must be disposed of or recycled properly due to the toxic materials used in electronic manufacturing.

When electronics are discarded in landfills, they can leach harmful substances like lead and mercury, and cadmium into the soil and water, potentially contaminating drinking water sources and harming ecosystems. While only a small percentage of e-waste is formally recycled, a large portion ends up in landfills.

Due to restrictions imposed on E-Waste disposal, unwanted and non-working electronics also end up taking up space in homes, basements, attics and storage units.

Lisbon residents and non-residents can discard those unwanted electronics. GreenBoard IT will again be collecting the E-Waste next Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the county courthouse parking lot at the corner of West Washington and South Beaver streets.

Items accepted free of charge include PCs, laptops, phones, scanners, hard drives, servers, unused printer cartridges or toner, cell phones, stereos, VCRs, DVD players, routers, MP3 players, cameras, keyboards, paper shredders, LCD monitors, game consoles and accessories, networking equipment and UPS (uninterruptible power supply). There will be a small fee charged for disposing of TVs ($20), CRT monitors ($20) and printers ($10).

Starting at $2.99/week.
