Several retirees rehired
The board of education approved the rehire of several retirees in its meeting Monday.
The board of education first discussed the four retire-rehires at length in a special meeting July 2. The rehires, which were unanimously approved as part of a consent agenda, will include two administrative positions in Superintendent Sean Kirkland, and Reilly Elementary Principal Cindy Viscounte and two staff positions in In-School Suspension Teacher Ronald Johnson, and Librarian Kathleen Piero.
The board also approved a resolution to officially place the renewal of the district’s $1.3 million fixed-sum operational levy. Treasurer Mike Douglas explained that while the board voted to place the levy on the ballot in its meeting last month, that the resolution had a few language issues such as an incorrect date, so a new resolution was placed on the agenda for approval to ensure there would be no issues with the levy. Last approved by voters in 2015, the operational levy is a fixed sum levy, meaning that the millage of the levy is automatically adjusted to collect only the designated amount as property values change.
Douglas has previously said that the funding from the levy is used to pay the district’s day-to-day operating expenses and has previously said that the levy allows the district to operate “within a very lean budget” and that without its renewal the district would be forced to go into deficit spending within the next few years. The levy has a collection period of ten years, and if approved by voters in November, would collect until 2036, and as a renewal it would not cost taxpayers any more than they are already paying.
During his report Kirkland told the board that there was currently some foundation and utility work in progress for the district’s new $57 million K-8 school building, and that the official groundbreaking for the school would be held between 10-10:30 a.m. Aug. 20, and that the board and all district staff would be invited for the ceremony, and that a letter would be sent out inviting the parents of students in the district to attend. He also said that the district was seeing an increase of the number of kindergartenstudents and may need to add a teaching position for a seventh class, but that all other hires for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year had been completed.
The board also approved several personnel and administrative items.
Personnel matters approved included: athletic supplementals for the 2025-2026 school year; the hire of EMIS Co-Ordinator Elizabeth Aukerman; the award of an Ohio Association of Public SchoolEmployees bid for Linda Cosgrove; and non-athletic supplementals for the 2025-2026 school year for Band Director Walker Martz, and Assistant Band Director Grace Shockey.
Administrative items approved included: a contract with the Auditor of State’s Office for generally accepted accounting principles conversion services of up to $16,200 per fiscal year; and an agreement with EMT to provide medical services for high school football games.
The board of education will meet next 7 p.m. Aug. 11.
