Bustling would be the right word to describe downtown Salem Saturday. The third annual nature+nurture maker's market combined educational displays and handmade items from local vendors. That event coincided with Freed Fest, the Salem Farm Market, and the Salem High School Alumni Association's Alumni Weekend. The nature+nurture maker's market featured opportunities to learn about nature including animal pelts and tracks from the Beaver Creek Wildlife Center; birds of prey from Raptor Hallow Sanctuary, and an educational show featuring reptiles and amphibians by Komara Outdoors. New this year was a walk-in butterfly tent by Beech Creek Botanical Gardens and Nature Preserve, and a fairy display by Hitting the Highway with Hannah. On Target Canfield returned with free archery in the Ohio Department of Natural Resources truck. Studio of Fine Arts by Anissa DiLeo had an art area for kids featuring mural painting and a take-home surprise. The event featured "kidpreneurs" and favorite nature+nurture maker's market vendors including: La Petite Crochet LLC, Wild Roots & Muddy Boots, Olive & Ivy Boutique, Lavender House, Red Lightning Custom Woodworking, Magnolia & Co. Vintage, Bull Creek Farm & Market LLC, Wild Roots Soap Co. LLC and more. The Freed Fest celebrated the achievements of music legend Alan Freed, a 1940 SHS alumnus who coined the phrase, "Rock and Roll" and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Above photo, Jen's Paint Cellar of Salem held a "Meet the Artist" display showcasing the work of children from previous classes under the direction of local art instructor Jen Walter. From left, Claire Duvall, 8; Remi Morris, 9; Jen Walter, Elanor Fredrickson, 7; and Emmy Clark, 8. Art camp is held at Jen's Paint Cellar from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays and Thursday with a weekly theme during the summer months. Also, an after school enrichment program will be held from 4:15-6 p.m. once school is back in session with a new theme each month. More information is on Facebook. (Photos by J.D. Creer)
