Leetonia school board makes personnel moves

LEETONIA — Down two of their five board members, Leetonia schools still had enough bodies to make some key personnel decisions during Wednesday’s meeting.

Board members Larry Duko and Michael Henderson were absent, leaving Jennifer Merritt, Marilyn Heddleson and Michele Votaw to hold down the fort.

The session basically went off without a hitch with Merritt, a former board vice president, officiating.

Teachers Carly Harris and Jennifer Hartman updated the board on the two-week STEM camp held this summer for 37 K-3 students as well as the before care/after care programs held during the school year.

Hartman explained feedback was mostly good regarding the inaugural STEM camp, and 40 children already have signed up for the before care and aftercare program.

The two women were employed to oversee the program at $30 per hour, while the board also hired their staff at $25 per hour, including Mike Frenger, Alisha Wolfe, Kellee Chaffee, Deirdre Sadler, Kim Stefanak, Tiffani Beverly, Carrie Roller, Emily Rodik, Karen McKim and Catherine McCoy.

Action on the employment of Dan Votaw as a substitute bus driver effective Aug. 13 had to be tabled until the September meeting due to the quorum issues, as his wife would legally have to abstain from the vote, leaving the district short for passage.

The board also approved payment in lieu of transportation for the following students to Heartland Christian School in Columbiana: Josh Alvarez; Gracie Burbick; Riley Garcia; Orianna Jackson; Kaelyn McLoud; Jocelyn Smith; Allie and Brodie Boyd; Delana and Dominic Cope; Abel, Abigail and Aiden Day; Ava and Tyler Farmwald; Elias, Isaiah and Nora Garnes; Darian, Ethan, and Kathryn Gingrich; Gary and Sienna Hooten; Emma and Matthew Kundravi; Asher and Connor Midcap; Abel, Abigail and Elijah Seaman.

At the conclusion of action items during the regular meeting, board officials entered an executive session to discuss compensation of a public employee and union negotiations with no action to be taken,
