Salem FD handles garage fire on Cedar Ridge Drive
SALEM — The fire department extinguished a garage fire on Monday.
The fire department responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Cedar Ridge Drive at 3:35 p.m. Monday for a fire in the garage. When firefighters arrived, light smoke was observed coming from the garage and they located a fire originating in a trash can after a resident discarded hot cooking grease. Engine two deployed a one and three quarters inch attack line and quickly extinguished the fire, and the drywall was removed in the immediate area to check for extension with none found.
Capt. Steven Mix said that one resident was home at the time of the fire but was not inside the garage, and that they had seen the fire through a garage window and reported it before exiting the residence. He also said that there was one vehicle inside the garage at the time of the fire which was undamaged and that the fire had been successfully contained to the can with no other significant damage.
“The can is completely gone though. The only thing that survived was the wheels,” said Mix.
The Perry Township, Damascus, and Green Township fire departments responded for automatic aid but were canceled prior to their arrival.
