Goshen Twp. trustees OK police officer promotions

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP — The board of trustees approved the promotion of two police officers Tuesday.

Trustees voted unanimously to approve a request by Police Chief John Calko to promote Officer Mitchell Sauerwein to detective. Calko explained that the position has been vacant since the department’s previous detective, Hoyle West, shifted from full-time to part-time on June 10 and that several officers had excelled in the position in an unofficial capacity while the department was determining which officer would be the best fit.

Trustees also approved a request to promote Officer Michael Platt to the sergeant position left vacant by the resignation of Domenico Marchionda on Aug. 12. Calko sand Assistant Police Chief and Lieutenant Ryan McBride conducted an extensive interview process and that “of the many applicants” they agreed Platt was the best candidate, noting that he performed the best during the interview process and had decades of police experience.

Other police matters approved included a proposal for HCS Consulting to replace four of the department’s computers for $4,912 which includes the cost of equipment, installation and disposal of the old computers. Calko explained that these computers operated on Windows 10 and were too old to be upgraded to Windows 11 and would need to be replaced as support for Windows 10 is ending in October. Calko told trustees that two of the laptops for the department’s cruisers had already been replaced for the same reason and that after the completion of the proposal the department’s upgrade to Windows 11 would be complete ahead of the service cutoff on Oct. 14.

During his report, Calko said that the township’s annual community day for 2025 would be held in October rather than during the summer as it has in recent years. Calko said that this year’s community day would be a trunk or treat event which would either be held on or close to Halloween and have “treats for the whole family” including candy, hot cider, and donuts, and that the location was still being determined.

Other matters approved included a propane pricing agreement with Powers Oil & Propane for $1.99 a gallon with the number of gallons to be determined based on last year’s usage; and a routine resolution accepting the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and certifying the necessary tax levies to the Mahoning County Auditor.

The board of trustees will meet next at 6 p.m. on Oct. 14.

Starting at $2.99/week.
