Three Columbiana school administrators eye retire-hire

Maryann Ossoff accepted the Key Clipper award Tuesday night at Columbiana Exempted School District’s regular board meeting from district superintendent Donald Mook, left and high school principal Jeff Jackson. Jackson presented the honor to Ossoff on behalf of her and her husband, Ted, explaining that the couple’s golf course, Valley, had served as the longtime home of the Clipper golf program, which has qualified for 19 trips to state tournaments. He attributed much of the school’s success to the Ossoffs, who have owned the club by 45 years and offered one of the area’s most successful longstanding junior golf programs at no charge. COLUMBIANA — Three of the district’s top administrators are looking to retire in 2026 and be rehired, so the district approved a resolution to initiate procedures in anticipating of that happening.

District superintendent Don Mook and treasurer Kathy Davies submitted notice of their pending retirements effective at the end of business July 31, while elementary principal and assistant superintendent Kim Sharshan effective at the end of business May 29.

During Wednesday’s regular board meeting, which was overseen by Michael Clark in president Michael Roncone’s absence, board members went through an agenda for 90 minutes, voting on action items before going into executive session for personnel.

All three retiring administrators went into the executive session with board members near the conclusion of the regular board meeting. Clark expected there to be no action.

All three are hoping the board elects to rehire them during the November regular meeting, after an Ohio Revised Code-mandated public hearing.

Procedures governing retire-rehire requires special public input prior to reemployment is granted. They are seeking to return in early August 2026.

Mook has been employed as superintendent at Columbiana Schools since August 2009, previously serving as a teacher and technology coordinator for Lisbon Exempted School District.

Sharshan has served 32 years at Joshua Dixon Elementary School, including 20 as principal.

Davies spent 16 years of treasurer at United Local School District before coming to Columbiana in 2013.

The public hearing currently is scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Columbiana High School media center.
