Jury trial remains set for man charged with rape
LISBON — A jury trial remains set for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 17 for Brett Thompson, an East Liverpool man charged with four counts of first-degree felony rape, but with a final status hearing set for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 13.
Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam said during a meeting with attorneys for both sides before a brief hearing Friday, it was indicated there were ongoing negotiations in an effort to resolve the case, but with no resolution at this point.
Thompson, 20, Dairy Lane, was accompanied by his defense attorney, Joseph Ohlin. The state was represented by Assistant Attorney General William Walton II, who was assigned to prosecute the case after the Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office cited a possible conflict.
Thompson remains out of jail on a $100,000 cash or surety bond, with an order to have no contact with the victim.
According to the indictment, Thompson allegedly compelled a woman to submit by force or threat of force to sexual conduct from Oct. 1, 2023 to Oct. 2, 2023, with each count representing a different form of sexual conduct.
Walton said during the hearing that discovery was complete from the prosecution. Washam gave the defense seven days to provide reciprocal discovery.
