Leetonia drinking water supply clears EPA lead action standards

LEETONIA — By the weekend, village officials got the all-clear on their drinking water supply, which earlier in the week had tested above the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lead level of 15 micrograms per liter.

The lead action level is a measure of the effectiveness of corrosion control treatment, not a standard for establishing a safe level of lead in a home.

According to Mayor Kevin Siembida, out of the 10 samples collected and tested for level, the village had eight that tested with little or no detection; however, two were over the permissible 15 mg/l, thus triggering action with the help of the city of Salem, which provides village water, and the Ohio EPA.

There is no safe level of drinking water, so exposure can cause serious health effects especially in children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

According to Leetonia’s lab analyst for its water and wastewater department, Ben Wilson, officials are working closely with the Ohio EPA to ensure their drinking water is safe, conducting extra lead and water quality tests, which are being expedited.

One set of such test samples was received Friday from a sink at 511 Butcher Road, and came back well under with only in both lead and copper.

Samples are being tested as received by Ream & Haager Environmental Laboratory Inc. in Dover.

Starting at $2.99/week.
