Trial reset for corrections officer charged with assaulting inmates
LISBON — A jury trial has been reset for 8:30 a.m. March 12 for a corrections officer charged with two counts of assault for alleged incidents against inmates last year.
David James Ferguson-Grantz, 27, Youngstown, appeared with his defense attorney James Lanzo for a status hearing Thursday in Columbiana County Municipal Court. Judge Kelly Linger had granted a motion for a continuance of next week’s trial date at the request of the prosecution. She scheduled the new jury trial for next year, which likely will be heard by the new incoming judge, Danielle Menning.
County Assistant Prosecutor Isabella Simon requested the continuance of the Nov. 5 trial date due to a necessary witness being unavailable to testify that day.
Ferguson-Grantz was working as a corrections officer at the Columbiana County jail when he was accused of allegedly throwing one inmate to the floor while he was handcuffed behind his back, then allegedly assaulting him again while he was sitting in a chair by grabbing him around the neck and hitting his head against the wall on Sept. 18, 2024. The inmate was transported to Salem Regional Medical Center for his injuries, with both incidents captured on the jail video cameras.
On Sept. 24, 2024, Ferguson-Grantz escorted another inmate who was handcuffed behind his back to Post 40 of the jail and allegedly assaulted him by pushing him up the steps of the officer’s podium and then jumping on top of him, folding him in half. The inmate was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center for injuries. That incident was also captured on jail cameras.
