Salem holiday home tour to celebrate Quaker history
SALEM — Tis the season and the Salem Federation of Women’s Clubs will help ring in the season by hosting a Christmas Home Tour. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 and 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 7.
Honoring the Salem Quaker history, the owners of these homes and buildings are willing to share the rich history and architecture.
Guests will begin their tour at the Smucker House at 271 Broadway Ave. in Salem. The Smucker House has been the home of the Salem Women’s Clubs since the 1950s. Obtain their tour program and a wrist band for discounts at area restaurants, and then continue the tour to five historic buildings decorated for the Christmas season. Two of these homes are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The first is Jim Harrington’s house at 829 S. Lincoln Ave. Built in 1859, this residence stands a testament to Salem’s pivotal role in the abolitionist movement and represents one of the city’s finest examples of mid-19th century architecture. Learn about the previous home owners contribution for a haven for freedom seekers during this dangerous and transformative period in America history.
Continue on the tour to the home of Gregg Courtad at 443 S. Lincoln Ave. Built in 1820 it was the first home built and seen when coming from Lisbon to Salem on South Lincoln Avenue.
Parking on South Lincoln will be permitted on the west side of the street during the tour.
The third home on the tour is the Courtney Home at 31099 Salem- Alliance Road. This home was built in 1906. This is a three story brick. A portion of the driveway is brick that was salvaged from Route 62 when it was paved. Imbedded in the home’s brick exterior is a U.S. geological survey marker dated 1906.
The fourth and fifth buildings are the historic Wilbur Friends Meeting House and school. The Salem and Damascus area was founded by Quakers. Built in 1856 the Wilbur Friends Meeting House was used for worship and business by the early Quaker settlers. It was in use until 1975.
