Angels for Animals volunteer steps up and challenges the community to help

The Johnsons stopped by Friday to drop off their monetary donation at the Angels For Animals facility in Canfield as part of the $50,000 match campaign. CANFIELD — Karen McBurney just doesn’t talk the talk. She also literally puts her money where her mouth is.

McBurney, a longtime volunteer at Angels for Animals, has stepped forward in midst of the non-profit organization’s campaign to make roof and heating system repairs. She is making a challenge to the community.

For all donations through the end of the month, no matter the size up to $50,000, McBurney will match the contribution.

As Angels For Animals’ co-founder Diane Less explained, the building has served them well for 26 years, but its age is beginning to show and is in the need of updates.

“We need to provide warmth and cooling efficiency. The current heating and cooling system is in critical need of repair,” she continued. “The roof has developed leaks in several locations. The ceiling is stained, and water dips show up here and there, now and again.

“We need to fix what we currently have to continue serving our shelter animals,” Less added.

McBurney explained that the dog area — where she spends 10-plus hours per week — is in particular need.

She started walking dogs five years ago –inspired by COVID as she believed she needed a purpose.

Besides being a dedicated volunteer, McBurney previously rescued dogs from Angels For Animals. “They do a lot of good work here and provide an one-stop adoption center,” she said.

Fifteen shelter dogs are housed in the original kennels and cages.

During a tour last week, Less and McBurney pointed out extensive roof damage in both the dog and grooming areas.

Checks either can be delivered in person or mailed to Angels for Animals, 4750 West South Range Road; Canfield OH 44406. Be sure to note “McBurney Match” on the memo line.

The shelter also accepts donations via its website at www.angelsforanimals.org. Check $50,000 match when making your donation.

All donations are tax deductible and will be matched if made through Dec. 31.
