East Palestine staff rush to aid at crash scene
EAST PALESTINE — Actions speak louder than words, and sometimes they teach lessons that transcend any classroom or playing field.
Two East Palestine City Schools employees showed a bus of student-athletes what real leadership looks like Tuesday night, first ensuring the safety of every student on board before rushing to help at the scene of a fiery two-car crash.
The East Palestine girls basketball team was heading back from United Local on Thursday night when bus driver, Matthew Beatty, and coach Rick Gates, came upon the wreck — one vehicle already in flames. After securing the students and confirming they were out of harm’s way, the two didn’t hesitate to act, East Palestine Schools said.
Beatty pulled over and he and Gates immediately worked to calm the chaotic scene. District officials said the pair remained calm throughout the emergency, putting out the fire and providing first aid and assistance to keep the scene under control until emergency crews took over.
“Our students look up to and respect their coaches and bus drivers, but last night, Matt and Rick gave them an example of true leadership,” Superintendent James Rook said in a statement. “They calmly deployed the bus’s fire extinguisher and medical kit, rendering aid and support until first responders arrived.”
Rook said the Lady Bulldogs witnessed a real-time example of courage and character.
“The students were given a rare and unforgettable lesson in selflessness,” Rook said. “This is the kind of character development that lasts far beyond the classroom or the court, and we celebrate the employees whose brave actions should be acknowledged.”
