Incarcerated Boardman man now facing 22-count drug indictment

LISBON — A man sentenced to jail last week for attempting to flee Columbiana County Common Pleas Court prior to a bond revocation hearing last month is now facing a 22-count drug indictment for alleged drug trafficking and possession for two separate incidents.

Sterling A. Henry, 27, Boardman, was served with the secret indictment Tuesday at the county jail, where he’s been serving 32 days for a charge of obstructing official business. He was sentenced Dec. 11 in county Municipal Court for the misdemeanor charge stemming from the Nov. 14 incident at the downtown courthouse. He was taken into custody on the first floor after a short foot chase down two flights of stairs and was taken back into the courtroom where his bond was revoked and he was taken to the jail. He was found with a sum of money and suspected narcotics in a cellophane wrapper in his wallet, the court affidavit said.

According to the new indictment, which was issued by the grand jury last week, the charges stem from incidents on April 2 and April 15 this year.

Charges for the April 2 traffic stop on County Home Road, not far from the county jail, included trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine, trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound and possession of a fentanyl-related compound, all second-degree felonies, and two counts each of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs, all fifth-degree felonies, along with specifications for forfeiture of money from a drug case.

Charges for the April 15 incident included aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs, both third-degree felonies, fourth-degree felonies of trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound, possession of a fentanyl-related compound, trafficking in heroin and possession of heroin, and fifth-degree felonies of trafficking in cocaine, possession of cocaine and three counts each of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs, along with specifications for forfeiture of money from a drug case.

According to a sheriff’s office report from April 2, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on County Home Road near U.S. Route 30 and knew the driver to possessed a suspended license. The vehicle had been under surveillance at the jail for possibly dropping off narcotics at the jail, with two detectives watching and listening to jail calls. The driver was identified as Henry, who had a suspended license and several warrants for his arrest out of Trumbull County. During a pat down, a hard object was found that was suspected narcotics. Located in his jacket was a large envelope containing two cell phones, a wallet and a large sum of cash, all totaling $13,518. He also had a child in the vehicle at the time, whose mother came to get him at the sheriff’s office.

Henry was taken into custody and items seized included the narcotics, two bags of marijuana, the two cell phones and the money.

The indictment accused him of allegedly trafficking and possessing cocaine equal or greater than 20 grams but less than 27 grams, fentanyl equal or greater than 10 grams but less than 20 grams, and less than bulk amounts of xylazine and buprenorphine.

“I’m shocked how bold these offenders are getting trying to bring that amount of drugs into a county facility,” county Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino said when contacted.

He said it’s unbelievable that someone would try to do it, but he said they’ll keep going after them. He also said the county will seek forfeiture of the money, which totaled $13,518 on April 2 and $4,152 on April 15.

For the April 15 incident, the indictment accused Henry of allegedly trafficking and possessing methamphetamine in an amount equal or greater than bulk but less than five times bulk, fentanyl in an amount equal or greater than 1 gram but less than 5 grams, heroin in an amount equal or greater than 1 gram but less than 5 grams, less than 5 grams of cocaine, and amounts less than bulk of ketamine. xylazine, and buprenorphine, along with the $4,152 in cash.0s
