SALEM — The members of the St. Paul Elementary Civics Club recently met with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

During a field trip to the state capital building in Columbus Dec. 18, the members of the St. Paul Civics Club met with DeWine as part of their study of leadership in civics. The students learned about DeWine’s gubernatorial responsibilities, the executive team he leads, and about what he has experienced throughout his career as a public servant at both the federal and state level.

The students also visited Ohio Sen. Al Cutrona’s office and learned about the many roles in which people serve as part of state governments. During their visit, the students had the opportunity to ask questions about what inspired each legislative aide to choose a job in state politics and how they could pursue a similar path of public service someday. Students also received a tour of the Ohio Supreme Court at the Moyer Judicial Center and the General Assembly’s chambers.

The trip reinforced student education about the three branches of government, from term limits to elections to constituent engagement, and celebrated Ohio State history. The club is grateful to Ohio Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel’s staff for coordinating the special experience and are excited to continue their civics education, and to apply what they have learned in an upcoming student-designed community service project next spring.

Local leaders interested in mentoring student projects are encouraged to contact St. Paul Elementary at 330-337-3451.

Starting at $2.99/week.
