Woman convicted for spanking a child while a daycare worker

CANFIELD — A Leetonia woman was convicted last week of a criminal charge stemming from spanking a child, while a daycare worker in Mahoning County.

Delayne Ann Meade, of Walnut Street, was found guilty of a minor misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct, after a judge heard from both attorneys and reviewed a video of the incident.

Meade allegedly had slapped a small child, who was reluctant to take a nap, repeatedly on the behind.

She was ordered to pay $150 in fines plus court costs, which was the maximum penalty permissible by law.

This incident was captured on video by a Meade co-worker in June 2025, who reported it to management and she subsequently parted way with her employer, A Step Ahead Day Care.

This is the second such time that Meade had been charged with a child-related criminal offense.

She had been convicted of disorderly conduct in Columbiana County last year, after she dropped off her 5-year-old daughter at the Leetonia Public Library with an accompanying adult as required for 90 minutes.

In that Columbiana County case, Meade originally had faced an endangering children charge. She ultimately was fined $250, ordered to 20 community services hours and directed to complete a parenting class. She also was sentenced to jail time, only serving one of 30 days as the other 29 was suspended.

Starting at $2.99/week.
