New pretrial set for man accused of causing crash that led to death

LISBON — A new pretrial date was set at 9:45 a.m. April 8 for a man accused of causing a Jan. 30, 2023 crash which led to the Jan. 31, 2023 death of 44-year-old Trevor Lee Reed of Salem.

Anthony L. Thornabar, 38, Spencer, W.Va., had been scheduled to face a pretrial Wednesday in Columbiana County Municipal Court, with the case now continued until April. Judge Danielle Menning noted that both sides indicated the discovery in the case was completed.

The charges against Thornabar were originally filed in January 2024, but the arraignment didn’t occur until November 2025 for misdemeanor charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter. The maximum possible penalty for the vehicular homicide charge, which is a first-degree misdemeanor, is six months.

According to the affidavit filed by Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Bruce Palmer, the crash investigation found Thornabar at fault for failing to stop or yield prior to entering the intersection of state Route 45 and Teegarden Road.

Thornabar was driving eastbound on Teegarden Road in a 2021 Dodge Ram pickup when he crossed state Route 45 and was struck by a 2012 Nissan Altima driven southbound by Reed, who had the right of way.

The affidavit said the Nissan rotated and struck a guardrail and the Dodge Ram went off of the road, vaulted over a guardrail and over an embankment, striking a group of trees. At the intersection, Teegarden Road has a posted stop sign and painted stop bar to control traffic through the intersection, while traffic on state Route 45 does not have to stop and has the right of way.

“The defendant admitted to not seeing a Nissan Altima/vehicle traveling southbound as he crossed state Route 45,” the affidavit said.

Reed, of Salem, died from his injuries the next day at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
