Salem chamber art gallery to feature photographer for February exhibit
SALEM — The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Gallery of Art will present its February exhibition featuring the photographs of Elise McKeown Skolnick beginning Tuesday.
According to a press release, the Chamber Gallery of Art will be hosting the exhibition, titled “Nearby Wonders,” from Feb. 3-27 at the Chamber of Commerce office at 210 E. State St. The exhibition will kick off with “an opening reception and meet-the-artist event” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, where attendees will have “an opportunity to meet Elise, explore her work, and enjoy an evening celebrating local creativity and regional connections.”
The release states that Skolnick’s photography “explores the quiet beauty found in locations within a short drive of Youngstown,” and “highlight the ‘truly interesting and beautiful things to see wherever you are'” with an emphasis on “places locals know but may overlook.”
“Rather than seeking exotic destinations, Elise turns her lens toward the everyday landscapes that shape our sense of home. Her images invite viewers to look again — to find meaning, memory, and serenity in the nearby, the familiar, and the almost-forgotten,” states the release.
The release describes the exhibition’s highlights as: photographs taken within one to 90 minutes of Youngstown; local small-town scenes, architectural textures, back roads, regional nature spaces; atmospheric light and emotional storytelling; and a sense of rediscovery of the Mahoning Valley and surrounding area.
“People often assume they need to travel far to find beauty. But there is so much wonder right here, just minutes away. Elise hopes her work encourages people to slow down and truly see the world around them,” states the release.
Admission to both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
