Columbiana County Health District releases annual report

LISBON — The Columbiana County Health District released its 2025 annual report this month, highlighting the numbers representing services provided to the public, inspections, complaints, permits issued, diseases and vital statistics.

“It really gets down to the details people are most interested in,” county Health Commissioner Dr. Wes Vins said during a recent health board meeting.

The department slimmed down the 2024 report last year and used that same slimmed down version for the 2025 report. The design includes a cover with photos, two inside pages and a back page. A copy of the annual report is posted on the agency website at www.columbiana-health.org.

Vins said he was really happy with it.

Under the administration division, for vital statistics numbers, there were 14 home births, 1,925 birth certificates, 2,832 death certificates and 409 burial permits, along with a summary of receipts and expenditures, noting that the total of state remittance for program funds sent to the state of Ohio totaled $98,829.

The nursing division reported 182 car seats distributed, 82 TB (tuberculosis) tests given, 33 sharps containers collected, 103 cribs distributed, 146 animal bites 

investigated, 207 complex medical health program patients served, 18 public health emergency preparedness grant deliverables, 34 Narcan kits provided to law enforcement, 411 patients received 810 vaccines and 230 cancer clinic patients were served.

The report also listed infectious diseases and counts reported for the county, with COVID-19 the highest at 544 cases, which is extremely less than the 1,492 cases for 2024. There were 23 COVID-19 hospitalizations. The next highest was 148 cases of influenza-associated hospitalizations and 146 cases of Lyme Disease. There were 96 cases of chlamydia, 39 cases of hepatitis-C, 12 cases of gonococcal infection (gonorrhea), 9 cases of campylobacteriosis (which causes diarrhea), and 9 cases of pertussis (whooping cough). Some of the other infectitious diseases listed included: E.coli, hepatitis B, salmonellosis, Legionnaires’ disease and syphillis.

Under the environmental division, numbers reported included 454 real estate inspections, 85 nuisance complaints received, six body art licenses issued, 51 public health emergency preparedness trainings, 318 private East Palestine well samples, 854 food inspections, 61 pool inspections, 45 camp inspections, $180,973 septic grant dollars administered, 30 expanded private well samples, 349 plumbing permits issued, 48 new septic permits, 74 replacement septic permits, 14 septic alteration permits and 139 well permits.

The county health district, which earned accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board in 2022. serves all communities and townships in the county, with the exception of the cities of East Liverpool and Salem, which have their own health departments.
