Columbiana school board learns about HB186 impact
COLUMBIANA — During a Tuesday BOE meeting, Columbiana School District treasurer Kathy Davies shared the impact of House Bill 186.
The legislation places significant caps on property tax increases, aiming to provide $1.7 billion in relief to Ohio homeowners over the next three years.
Davies projects a loss of $1.169,000 through 2030 due to retroactive caps back to the tax year 2025 update, although she added there won’t be an authoritative amount from the Ohio Department of Taxation until April 20.
The state anticipates that by addressing a 20-mill floor and lowering tax, relief could come to Ohio homeowners by June 2026.
An estimated loss of $115,600 in lost taxes is anticipated to reappraisal growth in 2029 due to the Ohio Department of Taxation, updates. Instead of the reappraisal being in 2029, it has been moved to 2030.
School board members also met in executive session at the conclusion of their regular agenda items for investigation of charges unless a public hearing was requested. No resulting action was taken.
The next regular school board will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 10 in the high school media center.
In addition to approving the five-year forecast as presented by Davies, members approved:
— The employment of Shawn Luketic as custodian to replace Elaine Tucker, who resigned Jan. 12.
— The following volunteers to assist with the spring musical: Leigh Ann Kocanjer, Emily McComas, Brandon Morgan, Alexa Tate and Bridget Wolsonovich.
— The 2025-27 school district calendar, which has the first day of school for students set for Aug. 18 and the last day of classes wrapping up before June 2027.
— A resolution for make-up calamity days to be set as follows: April 2 and 3 to be waiver days for staff only; April 5 as a student makeup day (#8), May 29 (#9) and June 1 (#10). Currently district students are to conclude the school year like in 2027 by the end of May; however, that could change if Columbiana uses any more calamity days by then.
— A proposal from GeoSport Lighting Systems LLC for a state term contract for lighting at the Ward Athletic Complex athletic field and track at a cost of $279,100.
— Approving a spring break trip from April 1-4 for the baseball team in Myrtle Beach.
