SALEM — The Salem Memorial Building celebrated the opening of its new computer learning center Thursday.

Memorial Building Project Manager Ronald “Brad” Lankford, described the opening of the computer learning center as “a long-time in coming.” The learning center will soon begin hosting free educational programming for people aged 55 and up.

Langford said that the learning center had been made possible through the support of Ohio Senator Al Cutrona, and Representative Monica Robb Blasdel in securing state funding for the project, and through the local support of the Salem Elks Club, Salem Community Foundation, the AARP, and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce among others, which provided funding to furnish the learning center with desks and chairs. He said the construction of the learning center was the latest step in the Memorial Building’s efforts to “more in accordance with William Mullins’ ideals when he started the building in 1919,” and to ensure that “when anybody has an interaction with the Salem Memorial Building their lives [are] just a little bit better.”

Memorial Building Director Steve Faber thanked everyone for attending the ceremony, and for their support in completing the learning center. Cutrona described the computer learning center as “an incredible project” and presented an official commendation recognizing the learning center’s completion and the Memorial Building’s efforts to serve the community.

“This is always exciting when a community comes together like you guys are doing here … it’s projects like this that we love to be able to support, and hopefully I will have the opportunity to do it again in the near future,” said Cutrona.
