Former corrections officer gets jail time for assaults of inmates

LISBON — A former corrections officer accused of assaulting two inmates in 2024 will return to the Columbiana County jail on Monday to begin serving a 37-day jail term for assault and attempted assault.

David James Ferguson-Grantz, 27, Youngstown, appeared with his defense attorney James Lanzo for what was supposed to be a jury trial Thursday in county Municipal Court, but instead opted to enter guilty pleas to assault and a charge of attempted assault amended from assault.

Judge Danielle Menning fined him $450 and sentenced him to 180 days in jail, with 140 days suspended and credit for three days served, leaving a balance of 37 days to serve in jail. The jail terms for each charge were ordered served at the same time.

He was also ordered to complete 20 hours community service and take anger management courses.

Ferguson-Grantz was working as a corrections officer at the Columbiana County jail when he was accused of allegedly throwing one inmate to the floor while he was handcuffed behind his back, then allegedly assaulting him again while he was sitting in a chair by grabbing him around the neck and hitting his head against the wall on Sept. 18, 2024. The inmate was transported to Salem Regional Medical Center for his injuries, with both incidents captured on the jail video cameras.

On Sept. 24, 2024, Ferguson-Grantz escorted another inmate who was handcuffed behind his back to Post 40 of the jail and allegedly assaulted him by pushing him up the steps of the officer’s podium and then jumping on top of him, folding him in half. The inmate was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center for injuries. That incident was also captured on jail cameras.
